On 18 July 2021* members of Heya Collective simultaneously live streamed for 1 hour, from Turkey, UK, Lebanon and Egypt, the sounds of their immediate surroundings in response to the call out for World Listening Day 2021 (link: https://www.worldlisteningproject.org/world-listening-day-2021-the-unquiet-earth/). It emerged for us as time to come together apart, listening to the audible and contemplating the positioning of the callout and our experiences of the pandemic, as female field recordists, our relationship to one another and to the environment. The end result was not quiet, let alone ‘beyond the threshold of human hearing’, but an interpersonal and interspecies dialogue (often precisely because of the absence of each other and of other species’ audibility in those moments) of dispersed but connected ‘noisy’ realities.

we used our last show of the summer to pay tribute to this year’s world listening day, celebrated each year on july 18th. this year we returned to our trusty friends at the aporee soundmaps and dug deep into their WLD2020 project map to make the framework (ahem) for this show. the WLD2020 project map on aporee features contributions recorded on that day from around the world – you can find it here: https://aporee.org/maps/projects/wld2020. we picked 13 contributions from 10 countries from some familiar and some new recordists to our airwaves.

we also listened to recent releases by absolute value of noise collaborating with anna friz, by jen kutler, and by hamed mafakheri. there are bandcamp links to all the releases, and from there you can find links back to the artist and label webpages, and stream of buy the releases yourselves. there are direct links to all the sounds on the aporee soundmaps, or you can find them all on the project map linked to above. and we began our show with a framework introduction recorded for us by james bailey in toronto, canada – you can hear more of his work on his soundcloud page, also linked to in the playlist. july 18th was world listening day – in this edition we listen to a few of the recordings uploaded to the aporee soundmaps WLD2019 project, and we hear an introduction recorded on that day as well. meanwhile we finally had a chance to check out david rothenberg’s 2-disc release on gruenrekorder, nightingale cities, featuring his signature improvisations with wildlife – this time, as you might have guessed, with nightingales, in berlin and helsinki. we also heard a sample from absolute value of noise’s outdoor solar powered generative radio station, which “tries to recreate the sounds of life in its immediate environment – imitating the sounds of insects, birds, frogs, magnetic phenomena, the wind moving through the trees, rain falling, and waves on the ocean.” you can listen live (during canadian daylight hours) at the link below in the playlist. also some historical concrete composition by greek composer myrielle kyrou, a live performance recording by bana haffar, and a composition commissioned by this year’s radiophrenia festival by kate carr.
