Dawn Birds, Light Traffic, Melodic Machines is a 58:00 sonic narrative collage composed of field recordings from different places—Dubai, Victoria, and Vancouver—at different times. This combination seeks to foreground, through either sonic simularity or serendipity, soundscapes that are representative of fluid time and place but solidly grounded in rich listening experiences.

COVID Dreamscapes is a sonic narrative of dreams prompted by the COVID-19 (COrona, VIrus, Disease) pandemic (pan = all, demic = people). COVID dreams are widely reported as strange, intense, colorful, and vivid reflections of concerns and fears over contagion, loneliness, loss of control, stress over work and/or life. Medical researchers offer interpretations about meanings. Websites provide opportunities to share and even visualize COVID dreams.

COVID Dreamscapes uses field recordings and found sounds to portray spiraling sonic mashups both real and imagined associated with my personal COVID dreams. While different from what other people are hearing in their COVID dreams these dreamscapes may prompt thoughts about this unique overlay of sound in our lives. […]

Coho Crossing is a sonic narrative about a crossing of the Strait of Juan de Fuca between Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, and Port Angeles, Washington, United States aboard the ferry Coho, named for the coho salmon found in the waters of the Pacific Northwest. John Barber created this composition from field recordings made aboard the Coho. In his introduction, Barber explains the sounds heard. In addition to contributing to framework, Barber manages Radio Nouspace (www.radionouspace.net), one of several global outlets for framework radio. this edition of framework:afield, entitled in progress, has been produced in the united states by john f. barber. for more information on his work see http://nouspace.net/john.

producer’s notes:

In Progress is a sound narrative with a rhythm, even melody, composed entirely of mechanical sounds. A hotel trash compactor in Bergen, Norway, dealing with the remains of a previous night’s party. Pile driving equipment in Victoria, Canada, shutting down after a day of building the new ferry boat landing pier. Wind chimes dancing in a strong east wind. Rain on a metal roof. A collage of sounds from a Maker Faire in Portland, Oregon. Electromagnetic radiation recorded by spacecraft exploring our solar system, and beyond. Air rushing through hotel front doors, and around the edges of an airplane window. A sound installation inside a traditional thatch cottage in Londonderry/Derry, Northern Ireland. An FM carrier signal after the failure of the audio transmission. Squeaking doors, thumping refrigerator compressors. Construction of a new house. Underneath London’s Millennium Bridge. A wall of corrugated paper in Copenhagen. Passengers boarding a ferry. Sound installations samples. A large scale printer finishing a poster. As John Cage told us, everywhere we listen, there is always something to be heard in progress.

this edition of framework:afield has been produced in vancouver, usa by john f. barber, and is entitled transect: london. for more information see http://www.radionouspace.org/john.

producer’s notes:

Transects is a sound art project investigating ways of sampling sounds along a path through a particular space or place. The desired end result is to promote immersive narrative collages of sounds that represent that place or space, all best experienced through listening.

My practice of creating transects draws on the features and affordances of soundscapes, soundwalks, and sound maps. Soundscapes are the multiple, overlapping, sounds one might hear at a particular location. Soundwalks promote listening to a soundscape by walking to sound sources. Sound maps plot sound sources at specific locations and promote listening to targeted sounds within a soundscape. Transects sample particular or characteristic sounds along a path through a space or place, which, when combined, provide a mix or collage of the soundscape.
