a compelling collection of releases finding their way into the show this week, not least of which is the re-release of jon hassell’s 1981 collection dream theory in malaya, his second fourth world release. mostly instrumental and exploring the tones and instruments of the senoi people of malaya, it also incorporates (as heard in the tracks we’ve selected) some field recordings. along with that we heard the latest release from  new york’s contour editions, new and old cassette releases by peter coyte and dillon vessels, a wonderful document of a fisherman’s strike in venice (as the strikers sounded their fog horns up and down the canals), and our latest selection of recent uploads to the aporee soundmaps. i’m late getting this out to you, and later for 100 other things as well – ah, the life of a work-at-home parent! – so i’m going to keep this blunt and get this show on the road. long, overlapped documents from astrid & ephraim wegner, a retracing of his ancestral emigration route from portugal to the states by steve peters, a single, extremely dissected field recording by mise_en_scene, and a glorious compilation of label artists from aposiopèse. all begun with an intro recorded for us (of what? we don’t know) by sam roberts. enjoy these great sounds! several new names to our airwaves in this edition: we recently encountered and have been exploring the work of manja ristić, instrumentalist, improviser and sound artist from belgrade; we’ve had the pleasure of discovering the solo work of tony buck, percussionist from the legendary group the necks; and claude schryer sent us not only this wonderful example of the work he is doing with his simple soundscapes project, but a framework introduction he recorded as well. this went along well with the latest offering from bjnilsen (not new to our airwaves at all), some unreleased works by sebastiane hegarty and thesoundcollective, and some recent sounds from the aporee soundmaps. #610: 2017.09.17 [matt shoemaker]

we’re back from our summer break, but sadly we’re back with another memorial edition, as we learned during our time away of the death of matt shoemaker, an artist whose work we have admired for a very long time. i first encountered matt’s work in the early 2000’s, through his releases on bernhard günter’s essential trente oiseaux label, and the textures he created and the sensibility in the structuring of his sounds were a great influence on my  own compositional endeavours. we first featured his work on the program back in 2006, and he has graced our airwaves several times since. his work, as has been pointed out, is greatly under-appreciated, whereas his name really deserves to be amongst the greats of our ‘genre’. i never had the pleasure of meeting the man myself, but from the tributes i’ve seen by those close to him personally, it seems this is also something i might regret. but in memory of matt i can at least hope to spread the knowledge of his great work a little, for those of you who may not be familiar with him, and provide a brief space on our airwaves for remembrance, for those of you who are. coming to you a little late this week, due to our recent travels in narva, where we were recording empty factories that sound like this:
http://aporee.org/maps/work/?loc=37236

so we’re going to keep this short and sweet – this is our last regular edition before our summer break (one more framework:afield to come next week), and we actually put this show together a few weeks ago, before learning of the death of pierre henry and decided to drop everything to make our special memorial edition. but our special sneak peak at jonáš gruska’s upcoming lp is still special, even though it’s now two weeks less sneaky, and we’re still just as impressed by the latest batch of tiny portaits from kate carr’s flaming pines label. plenty of other great sounds in here too, from gruenrekorder, impulsive habitat, the aporee soundmaps, and a new (well, new to us, not to him – he recorded it in 2015) framework intro from martin clarke. #602: 2017.06.11

it was only one regular edition back that we rattled on and on at you about our 600th (!) show, but landmarks come and go, and that one is already nearly forgotten, as we now, only two weeks later, hit the next one. this week FRAMEWORK TURNS 15. we broadcast our first show, with our then-co-host and co-founder joel stern, from the original denmark street studios of resonance fm in london, on june 14th, 2002. we featured works by alan lamb, dale lloyd, toy.bizarre, toshiya tsunoda, michael prime, the quiet american, jon tulchin, illusion of safety, aaron bergman, marcelo radulovich, josh russell, and (ahem) murmer. they all sounded great, but we’re horrified to admit that we, ourselves, sounded like squeaky schoolchildren (well, i did anyway; joel retained a somewhat greater composure). this has been online for some time now already, but we’ve more or less kept schtum about it, so you almost certainly missed it. but now, for your listening (dis)pleasure, we offer you, transferred from the original wax cylinder recording, framework #001:

http://www.frameworkradio.net/2002/06/001-2002-06-14/

meanwhile, we feel slightly confident that we appear at least mildly less rattled here in #602, featuring lots of great new and less-new sounds by artists whose work we definitely had not yet had the pleasure of hearing 15 years ago, and whose work we certainly would not have had the opportunity to hear if it weren’t for the longevity of a community project like framework; we have it to thank for so many vibrations making their way to our ears that never would have found their way there otherwise. #600! 2017.05.28

well, very quietly in the night, without much fanfare, we’ve hit another milestone. #600. we’ve been doing this so long that we’ve managed 600 shows, practically 600 hours of framework radio. that’s 25 straight days – you could lock yourself in a room for almost a month and listen to framework radio non-stop. will you? we hope not. but that’s up to you. and what’s more, #600 falls very close to our 15th birthday – edition #1 broadcast on resonance fm in london on june 14th, 2002. so in just over 2 weeks we’ll be piling the candles onto something sweet and singing quietly to ourselves.[…]
a very dense show for our 600th, featuring new physical releases by two very good friends of the program, mr. eamon sprod, aka tarab, and mr. scott sherk, aka scott sherk. also two newcomers to our airwaves, carlos casos and gavin prior, sounds from the aporee soundmaps, and a framework introduction recorded for us in australia by another long-time contributor, jeremy hegge. last sunday, may 7th, was international dawn chorus day, so we thought it appropriate to begin this show (after our introduction recorded in mexico city by new contributor dillon vessels) with a dawn chorus recording from that day made right here in south estonia by visiting irish nature recordist fintan o’brien. i had the pleasure of meeting up with fintan last week, and you can expect to hear more from him, including an edition of framework:afield, sometime in the not too distant future. plenty of recordings from estonia (and elsewhere) on his soundcloud page – this is his 5th or 6th recording visit here over the last 6 or 7 years.

meanwhile, another handful of actual physical releases this week, including the latest offering from long, long-time favorite of the program, eric la casa, as well as new sounds from dave phillips, luca forcucci, and novi_sad. […]

#596: 2017.04.30

we’ve been doing a bit of traveling lately – our last regular edition was sent to you from narva, in northern estonia, and this one is sent to you from perruel-sur-andelle, in northern france. the movement has been making us slightly forgetful though, and as we forgot to mention one of the artists in our last regular edition, so we forgot to mention the producer(s) of this week’s beautiful framework introduction, regular contributor to our framework:afield series with his earscape programs, d.l. lutz, with his colleague solara shiha. he had this to say about their recording:

For [this intro], I engaged a friend of mine, being a female artist and architect from Syria living and working in Berlin. We are standing on a building site in Berlin – concrete walls and ceilings dripping from a nightly rainfall. The drops also fall on scaffolding, making this metallic „cling cling“. […]

coming to you from the northern estonian city of narva this week, as i begin a new project in what remains of the old krenholm factory complex on the russian border. i’ll be sharing some sounds and images from that soon. but in the meantime, the playlist ended up rather long and complex this week, so much so that i embarrassingly forgot to mention one of the artists in the actual show, so a big apology to chris lynn and impulsive habitat for leaving them out, as the qixia release provided an essential backbone for this program, and comes highly recommended. you can find it for download at the links below in the playlist. many other (all?) of this week’s releases are also available as downloads, so this is a good time to show your support and check them out. i’ll start this playlist with a correction and an apology: this show featured a lovely self-released work by christopher j. morris entitled listening in the sunroom, which i inexplicably announced as being by richard bentley, perhaps in anticipation of his lovely framework introduction which we’ll be featuring in an upcoming show, or more likely just because i’m an airhead. sorry, christopher! i can’t change the audio that went out on the air, but i can at least apologise here and make sure the playlist is correct.

also this week: new sounds from the unfathomless label – two releases originating from right here in the baltics, by sala, from lithuania, and a tour of the old aldaris brewery in latvia by rihards bražinskis & raitis upens; a self-released cd by newcomer to our airwaves, grey frequency; an upcoming online release by tobias hellqvist; and a framework introduction recorded for us by mode analogue, who provided this enticing description:

it has been recorded in october 2016 on the cambodian island KOH RONG SAMLOEUM at the end of the rainy season on a beautiful stretch of coast being called the Sunset Beach. during this time the weather was still very rough and therefore the sound of the waves seems to be ever present. however, this was the first day since the end of the dry season when a little barge could approach this side of the island close enough to deliver urgently needed supplies and material which is usually carried by locals on a at times demanding jungle path during this time of the year. an appeal and an apology to start off this playlist – first of all, as i mentioned several times during this show, the track in the playlist titled melatonina is a mystery to me. even when submissions are unlabeled, or i misfile them, i can always track them down through emails or chat messages or download history. but the origins of this one have eluded me – i only know it’s title, and it’s been waiting quite a while to be identified and aired, so i thought i’d better just do it and ask you, dear listeners: did you send me this? let me know if you did, and i will add your name to the playlist and apologise profusely.

and speaking of apologies, here’s one more: i mistakenly announced dominique laloux’s beautiful aporee contribution recorded in togo as ‘anonymous’, when in fact his name is all over it. please accept my humblest, dominique.

otherwise a fault-free show made up of several unreleased online submissions, a new digital release of video game appropriated soundscapes on the gruenrekorder label, and one of the four sides of jason kahn’s latest double-lp release. all this began with a framework introduction recorded by good friend of the program jonathan coleclough, just a few hundred meters from where i’m sitting now, during a recent visit of his here to us in estonia.
