two new releases (actually one new, one upcoming) that i’m really excited about this week: first, the latest work by irish composer karen power, who stunned us with her album …we return to ground… a year or two back; this one is a collaboration with vocalist loré lixenberg, whose voice was captured in a series of location recordings and then placed in “a sonic macro environment, which is composed of multiple real & imagined places.”
the second is the latest compilation of works born from the mɜː.məˈreɪ.1ʃən (murmuration) series of residencies/gatherings/workshops curated by pheobe riley law and jez riley french (daughter/father) in glenshee, scotland – each year they gather a group of sound artists/listeners/thinkers on a particular sound-related theme for a series of collective explorations and listenings, and each year they release a compilation of works afterwards that i wouldn’t call a product or a result of the gathering, but something like a peek inside for the rest of us. 2025’s theme was “sounding objects”, “focusing on listening to, thinking about, discussing interaction and the materiality of sound as an object itself; micro-listening to single or collective physical objects (constructed and found), performative materials, from grass stalks to mountains to grains of minerals.” the sounds are stunning, and we had a hard time making this selection of only 6 works out of the 22 on the release. go check out the others! when it is released we’ll be adding the direct link to it’s bandcamp page to our published playlist.
also a new unreleased work by longtime contributor keith de mendonca, composed from the sounds of travel (car windscreen wipers, bangalore & berlin metros, freight train in beijing, rickshaw, lift sounds, plane sounds and walking sounds). it’s not online anywhere, as far as we can find, but there are other sounds on his soundcloud page, and many wonderful editions of framework:afield in our archives that he’s put together for us over the years.
and we began everything with a cavernous framework introduction recorded for us in the belly of a norwegian ferry by dillon vessels.
