so this is a somewhat special regular edition – or maybe a regular special edition? organise the adjectives as you see fit… in any case, you may remember me mentioning that i’d be traveling to gdansk to present some sounds at the annual beyond listening symposium organised by CENSE (the central european network for sonic ecologies), for which this year’s title and theme were re-sounding the rights of nature. well, it was last week, and it was intense, both in subject and in sheer quantity (and quality) of content. presentations of sounds, artistic projects, and academic papers by upwards of 50 participants; concerts, listening sessions, films and soundwalks over 4 days; with keynote addresses from pella thiel and cecylia malik. all in consideration of the rights of natural environments to defend themselves again human abuse. i won’t go on too long about it here, but there is plenty of information to be had about the gathering, and links to the participants, organisations, and subjects here:

so this show is not so much a response to the subject of the symposium, but a report on the human connections made: it is constructed entirely from the work of people i was able to meet, spend time with, talk to, or share a meal or a beer with (with one sneaky little track of my own as well – i was there too!), some of whom have been on the show many times before, some of whom were wonderful new encounters for me. it is comprised of both presenters and attendees of the symposium alike, and is by no means a complete or exhaustive playlist – i put this show together fairly quickly upon my return home, and was obviously only able to include artists for whom i could quickly find appropriate sounds. nor would i have had space to include all the wonderful artists and thinkers i met, even if i had been able to find material from them all. but fear not! further sounds are in the works – i am hoping to work with many of the contributors to the symposium (some of whom are featured in the this edition, many of whom are not) to produce a series of framework:afield editions based on presentations at the symposium. it will take some time to organise, but i hope by early next year we can begin a series of shows that have grown out of beyond listening 3: re-sounding the rights of nature, so stay tuned!
