Les Murmures du Chateau (The Whispers of the Chateau) is a sonic portrait of the Château de La Napoule, located in the Côte d’Azur region of France.

In November 2024, I attended an artist residency hosted by the La Napoule Art Foundation with the intention of creating a soundscape composition that characterizes the sounds in and around the Chateau. During that and subsequent visits, I collected over twelve hours of field recordings using a 2nd order ambisonic microphone. I edited that material down into this radiophonic piece, being presented here in stereo and on my Bandcamp page (https://shawnpinchbeck.bandcamp.com/album/les-murmures-du-chateau) in the immersive binaural audio format for headphone playback.
The Chateau was created almost hundred years ago by wealthy and eccentric artists Henry and Marie Clews. It carries on their creative legacy today as an arts centre, hosting artist residencies and exhibitions. This unique structure features incredible architecture, and numerous strange and fantastic sculptures, that were their life’s work.
