Dreamstates / Hypnagogia
Glenn Gould- reminiscing on a childhood memory of being driven home after hearing a concert explained how he fell into a wonderful state of half awakeness, where you heard all sorts of incredible sounds going through your mind- and they all where orchestral sounds but I was playing them all.
The compositions and field recordings presented in this episode inspire this ephemeral state, described by Gould, known as hypnagogia. Works by Udyt, Fabia Racca, and Gayle Young invoked this state through deep listening and improvisation. Anders K. Langstrand augments the soundscape by recording it through resonant spaces, and my own works weave field recordings with electronics to create a space between reality and imagination. Others simply capturing the raw wonder and magic of this world, such as Rodrigo Dario’s Floresta.
In the middle there is a medley of sounds recorded by various science agencies: ESA, NASA and PALAOA. Ionized air bursts, electromagnetics of the Van Allen radiation belt, and whales vocalizations blend together exposing rhythms and melodies that are universal.
