we haven’t known karen power‘s work all that long – she first appeared on the show in late 2023 – but every new release we hear blows us away. this one is no different. “celebrating the power, wonderment and abundance of sonic beauty still present within two of our worlds most extraordinary places: the arctic and antarctic,” the four compositions on the release weave together field recordings from those locations with composed and improvised orchestral and instrumental sounds.
also someone whose work we’ve known for a long time (he made his first appearance back in 2011), but for whom releases are rare, we got to explore an upcoming one (it releases october 8th) by mark peter wright, exploring “the critical, playful and pedagogical potential of field recording. all tracks were recorded during one afternoon in a section of woodland in north yorkshire, [asking] how the field is crafted and conversely, how does the field craft recordists?”
we also heard the lastest from canadian electroacoustic composer roxanne turcotte (also upcoming on october 2nd), a selection of compilation tracks from institute for alien research boss shaun robert, the latest selection of listener chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps (this week from ghana, french guyana and taiwan), and a framework introduction recorded for us in italy by mark gorney.
