i mistakenly announced that this week’s intro was recorded in the united states for some reason, je ne sais pas pourquoi, as we are very clearly in france, so sorry about that. perhaps it was because the french café-goers were quickly transported into the cicada drones of missouri, as we began the show with shawn edward hansen‘s collection documenting the different moments of a full day of the dog-day cicada’s song, recorded in late summer 2023 in kansas city. we then moved back across the ocean to the uk, where filipina sound-artist makhun presents 3 urban field recordings captured around the island.
bouncing back to the u.s. we are pleased to present, for the first time on the program, brian house, who has recorded 24 hours with selfmade infrasound ‘macrophones’ in the small town of amherst, massachusetts, which are sped up by a factor of 60, turning 24 hours into 24 minutes, and bringing the recordings into the range of human hearing. house says: “even though you can’t hear it, infrasound fills the air. and because the atmosphere doesn’t absorb it like regular sound, infrasound comes from hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away. if humans could perceive frequencies lower than 20 Hz, then changing ocean currents, wildfires, turbines, receding glaciers, industrial HVACs, superstorms, and other geophysical and anthropogenic sources from across the planet would be part of the quotidian soundscape of our lives, wherever we might be.”
and would you believe we then moved back across to the uk to check out the latest from scottish artist fletina (a 30-minute tortured sound collage made from recordings of various objects knocking, scraping and bouncing off metal surfaces), and then back again to the u.s. for a first appearance on the show by chicago’s lemon ice cream (aka annabelle kathleen marcile akers) composing with sounds from (natch) the church of st. mary the virgin, holy island, berwick-upon-tweed, uk; chicago, illinois; and the modern wing of the national gallery of scotland, edinburgh. and intertwined with this preposterous session of atlantic ocean aural ping pong, we also visited russia, the netherlands, germany and croatia via the great aporee soundmaps.
