Listen to a Total Solar Eclipse
Parts of Mexico, the United States, and Canada experienced a total solar eclipse on 8th April 2024. During a total solar eclipse it’s very easy to get caught-up in the moment. That moment tends to overwhelm the participant’s visual sense and thermosensation. This composition isolates the audio.
The piece is comprised of three sound sources linked together in real-time during the event:
1. A field recording near a spring-fed creek in some woodlands.
2. A human family.
3. A sonification of the brightness using a Koma Field Kit and a Moog Werkstatt: The brightness of the sun is represented by a synthesized pitch. Using a luminosity sensor connected to the VCO of the synthesizer, the frequency decreases as a function of the decreasing brightness.Over the course of 57 minutes these three elements are woven together to capture the audio of how a total solar eclipse impacts life on earth. Specifically a farm in southern Missouri USA.
Whether you have experienced a total eclipse of the sun or not, this composition aims to be a source of inquiry through active listening. This is a jumping-off point to spark curiosity, make observations, encourage wonderings, and stimulate new questions.
