listening to the wind (2024)
Joseph Young (UK/IE/DE)

“(W)e, personally, cumulatively, communally, create and recreate landscapes – a landscape being not just the terrain but also the human perspectives on it, the land plus its overburden of meanings.” – Tim Robinson, Connemara: Listening to the wind (2006)

listening to the wind conjures a landscape in sound inspired by the work of Tim Robinson (1935-2020). Robinson was an artist, writer and cartographer, originally from England, who spent many years living and working in Connemara, documenting its landscape and culture in a series of celebrated books and hand-drawn maps. Taking these works as a starting point, the soundscapes evoke a spectral cartography of the area, exploring the many layers of experience we bring to our listening.

The field recordings were gathered during a four-week residency at Interface in the Inagh valley with ceramic artist Kay Aplin. Each day was spent walking the land, exploring the inlets, bogs, and pathways of the southernmost part of Connemara, uncovering its traces and topographies and (sound)writing the invisible record of our fleeting presence.
