e99 winter diary revisited
(homage to r. murray schafer)

Winter Diary Revisited is a new work by Canadian soundscape composer Claude Schryer which was the first presentation of the 2022 Deep Wireless Festival of Radio and Transmission Art which took place on Sunday February 6th at the NAISA North Media Arts Centre in South River, Ontario. This radio documentary is a tribute to Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer who passed away in August 2021. Schafer’s writing and the research undertaken with the World Soundscape Project were foundational to the development of the field of acoustic ecology.

Schryer goes back to Schafer’s diaries that he was keeping in the late 1990’s when the two worked together on the production of Schafer’s Winter Diary which was created for WDR Köln. In Winter Diary Revisited, Schryer ‘revisits’ this trip by illustrating excerpts of Schafer’s text with new winter soundscapes recorded in Ontario and Québec in 2022 as well as archival soundscapes and previous soundscape compositions. Winter Diary Revisited is episode 99 of Schryer’s conscient podcast and includes the voice of Canadian poet Robin Mathews reading Schafer’s words. This version of the piece is 57 minutes.
