of course we are all horrified by the recent events in ukraine, and there’s not a lot i can say to address this. but being a radio program centered around listening to sounds and spaces, this felt like the only reasonable response. in this edition we are listening to ukraine – works by ukrainian artists, or sounds recorded within ukrainian borders. the releases we are featuring are available for sale on bandcamp, and the proceeds from their sales are being donated to various organisations and charities committed to providing aid and assistance to ukrainians suffering due to this war. please follow these links and buy these works to show your support:

the first is a compilation or ukrainian experimental music released in 2019 by kate carr‘s flaming pines label. it was curated by igor yalivec, whose own solo release, which we are also listening to, came out just last year. igor is also coordinating the distribution of funds generated by the proceeds of the sales of those two records.
slovakian artist lucia nimcová began documenting ukrainian khroniky (folk songs) with scottish artist sholto dobie in 2014. their work has been presented in many ways, but the latest is as an lp and download release by the label mappa. the songs themselves are presented within a rich sonic tapestry of the sounds that surround them in the environment of their origin. it is my understanding that mappa is currently donating not only the proceeds from the sale of this release, but of their entire catalog to help ukrainians on the ground.
together with these releases we took ourselves on a private voyage through ukraine via the aporee soundmaps, exploring all the sounds that have been contributing to the maps within its borders over many years. we include a selection of these recordings, from around the country, by both ukrainian and visiting artists, in this program.
