2025 was declared the international year of glaciers’ preservation by the united nations. to celebrate this decision forms of minutiae has published a series of albums dedicated to glaciers and the acoustic multiplicity of the ice; we’ve heard one or two already in past editions, and this week we explore cheryl e. leonard‘s contribution: from walrus encounters at 79° north to watching the surface of the ocean freeze at -35° celsius, leonard summons and celebrates the high arctic, investigating the far north via compositions inspired by the unique wildlife, environments, and human histories of svalbard and greenland.
we are also listening to another release by moving furniture records: fani konstantinidou composes for percussion idiophones, electronics, and variable field recordings. the field recordings change with each performance of the piece. through the score, one of the two performers is instructed to record short sound fragments from (or near) the performance space itself; these recordings are then integrated in the performance, contributing to the development of the structure of each movement.
also ambient drone music by colonial skyway, composed using found sounds to convey a sense of loneliness and space, trying to give voice to the forgotten machines or the ignored systems of mechanized domestic service; and two EPs by andy fray, composed from sounds collected near the artists home: the first, a soundwalk through a local forest, and the second a pier at a local ferryport.
all this along with recent listener-chosen favorites from the aporee soundmaps, this week from france, spain, south korea, and the island of svalbard; and a framework introduction recorded by paul dickinson “in a bowl created by sand dunes in the illinois state beach park, in zion illinois. boats, trains, and airplanes go about their business while the dune grasses sway in the breeze.”
