this edition of framework:afield, entitled windodrone, has been produced in toronto, canada by james bailey. for more of his work see https://jamesbailey1.bandcamp.com. producer’s notes:
This is an unaltered – apart from editing for length and normalization for level – recording made from my bedroom window one afternoon in mid-August 2025. There was a noticeable drone of unknown origin (possibly a central air conditioning compressor unit?) that had been running for some time and I thought it might make an interesting source for some future recording project. As often seems to happen with me though, shortly after starting the recorder, the drone stopped. I decided to leave it running though, and see what might happen. After an hour or so I decided to stop the recording and give it a listen. To my surprise, the result actually seemed “musical” to my untrained ears; different elements came and went throughout, some repeating with variations, there were constant rhythmic elements such as crickets chirping, and the drone did indeed return later, providing a sort of continuo. The only real disappointment was a lack of birdsong. A simple audio snapshot of the soundscape in the east side of Toronto.
