greetings, folks, we are back after our annual summer break – sadly, though, while we were away we learned of another loss to our community, and although we came slightly late to the news, we are dedicating this first edition of our autumn season to the life and amazing work of composer, theater and television director, author, professor, photographer and sailor arsenije jovanović, who was born in belgrade on september 30th 1932. he passed away on may 14th of this year at the age of 92.

i first found jovanović’s work as a young student in paris in the mid-nineties. at the time i was obsessed with and was devouring the sound works of parisian artist éric la casa, and snapped up anything released on his record label la legende des voix. these releases were largely related to his own work and other contemporary-to-the-time french artists – syllyk (la casa’s project with his partner sylvie larouche), brume, la casa’s own first solo release – but there was one that he recommended to me that stood out: a self-titled collection of radio art works by a definitely-not-french artist with a clear penchant for sailing, arsenije jovanović. i listened to this cd avidly for years; there was little information about the artist himself in the liner notes, but in these pre-internet days i was quite used to knowing little about the origins of the sounds i loved.

it wasn’t until 2008, when the american publishers FO A RM, and/OAR and alluvial co-released another wonderful collection of his work, that i learned a little more, and then again not until the early 2020’s, when a sudden burst of physical releases appeared, and i discovered a treasure trove of new-to-my-ears works on a newly founded bandcamp page.

learning about the man behind the art a little more now, while preparing for this show, i find myself regretting never having had the opportunity to meet him, or learn from him, or experience any of his works in performance. i feel a connection to his theatrical background, and his subsequent split with it, as it mirrors somewhat my own trajectory, and i find myself deeply inspired by his thoughts and his works. of this trajectory, in a recent interview with serbian publication vreme, and i paraphrase slightly, he said this:

If everything that preceded in my earlier period of life is erased, I feel somehow crippled, it seems as if I didn’t even exist before that period, as if I hadn’t directed so many theater plays[…], as if I hadn’t shot many television and film productions, as if I hadn’t written three books[…]. A man is not made of what he is doing right now, but of everything he has done in his life.

i’ll share some links here to explore the artist’s work further, to read the interview i mention above in full, and to find some other writings that are definitely worth your attention. thanks to manja ristić for her help and input towards the production of this tribute.
