this edition of framework:afield has been produced in finland by isto rahkila. for more of his work see https://istorahkila.blogspot.com. producer’s notes:

I have long been interested in what is found between sounds or shapes and I think it has at least as much influence on what can be perceived by seeing or hearing. So to speak, it is emptiness and silence that got me here. I’m also a big nature lover so it is probable that through these interests I naturally found myself in the field with recorder in hand. I don’t remember exactly where it all started, but I was wondering where I could go to experience the silence of nature and capture those moments. Through a few years of active listening, I had also become more aware of how much sound comes from us humans and our inventions. These things had a major influences on why I started to seek and long for silence.

In this edition you can hear field recordings from a project ”audible natural luxury” I’ve been working on for the last year.

The project approaches noise pollution from a nature conservation perspective and explores the silence of nature as a valuable natural resource.

The project was born from a simple premise: Where to find silence or noise pollution-free nature in Finland? With this idea in mind, I have recorded in various locations in Finnish nature, and will continue to do so. Recordings in this edition were made during 2024-2025 from the northern fells to the outer archipelago in four different locations.

You will notice as you listen that the recordings are not silent and what silence is, I don’t feel the need to talk about it now. At least not yet, I don’t want to come to any conclusions. Only thing I can say is that it’s something personal but also shared precious luxury.

Lastly, I would like to thank Patrick for having me here, Kone foundation for funding and of course the listeners. <3
