this is our 3rd edition of framework:ephemera, our new occasional series of shows featuring selections from the personal collection of an artist who has invited us into his or her home or studio. in this edition we visited ernst karel in boston, who selected some great sounds for us: a release on smithsonian folkways‘ archival series from another current boston resident, jed speare; an amazing collection of the 2 minute silences that the bbc has broadcast each year on armistice day since 1929 collected by jonty semper, and released, no less, on zoviet france’s historic charrm label; a few samples from aaron dilloway’s 3 cd collection of found radio excerpts from nepal; a classic piece of cinema pour l’oreille (cinema for the ear) from 1930 by walter ruttmann; and other great sounds from peter cusack, united states of belt, gilles aubry, and john arndt. to these selections i added my own choices from ernst’s own wonderful release on the ever-prolific gruenrekorder label, swiss mountain transport systems, a collection of untreated recordings from cable cars, ski lifts, helicopters, and more.
