Post-Industrial Broadcast #1 portrays a fictional place or state in a process of transformation. The piece draws from a range of source materials including hydrophone and contact microphone recordings, a radio, the human voice, two-way radios, and an oil radiator. The piece unfolds in a wave-like structure. Subtle sounds of water emerge and recede giving a sense of constant flow, while sheets of sound – long, loosely articulated sound gestures – are agitated and interrupted by unpredictable micro-collisions and interference.
The image was taken on the shore of Lake Ontario, Leslie Street spit, Toronto.
Nichola Scrutton is a Scottish composer and sound artist based in Glasgow.

Cassette music composed at The Hotel Amnesia, November 2014. Source sounds recorded at Boott Cotton Mills, Lowell National Historic Park, Lowell MA. Dedicated to Roz and Brett Bass.
When I’m not making music, I teach middle school in Lowell, the first planned industrial city in America. Every year, Lowell children go on school field trips to Boott Mills. They learn about water power, the once-booming textile industry that displaced farming communities in the 19th century, and the worker strikes that led to child labor laws. When it was established in 1826, Lowell was the height of technological innovation. Factories were constructed along the Merrimack River in order to mass produce textiles, and a system of canals carved through the city to power the new mills. After World War 2, the textile industry went south and the mills mostly fell neglected. Boott Mills is preserved as a museum. Others have been converted into loft apartments, research labs and office space. Many more are decaying shells with hundreds of broken windows overlooking the river, waiting for investors to arrive and turn them into something desirable.

My work explores the way we shape, reshape and are shaped by the natural and built world. From desire paths, de-population, decay and renewal, I’m interested in exploring the lived sonic realities and histories of human places.
I use sound to interrogate the ways we come to understand, cherish and mark special places whether these be sites of important memories, or everyday places which soothe. I’m interested in the ways we get lost in places physically and emotionally and the ways we find our way again.

Parc National de Skaftafell, Islande, fin de matinée du 7 août 2012. Au pied de la langue terminale du glacier Falljökull. Grise, maculée de cendres volcaniques, de poussières, de pierres de toutes tailles. Orientée plein sud-ouest, une chaleur exceptionnelle (même pour la saison) la fait fondre de manière spectaculaire. Des blocs de glace, des amas de pierres et des rocs glissent, coulent, chutent dans les petits lacs de fusion.

this field recording came about after reading a text written by a member of the monogrammist sect in the mid 16th century, of a certain music of an anonymous bird, that transmitted sound through a remote netherlandish forest via his eyes and wings. this music/sound was described as being similar to a storm, often times loud, often times very quiet. rain would be heard when it was not raining. there was a repetitive element to the music. the music was black. foreigners to the land did not hear the music, nor see the bird. some monogrammists living in the forest over time came to hear it, and to see the bird from time to time. they attempted to describe it in writing as they could not record it. over time the bird became invisible to them, and the sound disappeared.
Ingenting is a collective working with the concept of nothingness as envisioned by Ingmar Bergman and Sven Nykvist. Recently they have moved into the region of memory, more specifically; the memory of nothingness, which has brought them to the musical teachings of the composer Erich Zahn and the alchemist Harry Slow. They are currently based in Portland, OR and nowheres North Carolina.
